Have you ever tried to earn something that was already freely given to you?

Sometimes we live the Christian life as though God’s acceptance depends on how well we perform. We know that salvation is by grace, yet we can easily fall into the trap of believing that we must work to remain worthy of that grace. We measure ourselves by our obedience, our good works, our religious activity, or how well we think we are doing compared to others.

But the Gospel reminds us of something radically different: we are not saved by what we do for God, but by what Christ has already done for us.
