Our History
How it all started...
Open Door Baptist Church began in 1962 when God led Dr. Robert E. Mayer to start a small Bible study in a private home. What began with a handful of believers soon grew into a congregation gathering for regular worship services in downtown Lebanon. As the ministry expanded, God continued to open doors, providing new facilities, new opportunities for outreach, and eventually the establishment of Lebanon Christian Academy in 1978 to help equip the next generation for Christ.
Over the years, the Lord faithfully guided our church through seasons of growth and transition. After serving as pastor for 35 years, Dr. Mayer passed the mantle of leadership to Pastor Craig L. Griffith in 1997. Under his leadership, the church continued to grow and, in 2001, officially became Open Door Baptist Church. Pastor Griffith faithfully shepherded the congregation for 23 years until the Lord called him home in 2020.
In 2021, Pastor Jeffrey D. Bateman became the third pastor in our church's history. Having previously served on staff, Pastor Bateman shares the same vision that has guided Open Door from the beginning: to be a place where God's Word is faithfully preached, Christ is honored above all else, and people are equipped to know Him, serve Him, and share His love with others.

Our Distinctiveness
Open Door Baptist Church is a traditional, independent Baptist church rooted in a rich heritage of biblical conviction. Throughout history, Baptists have stood firmly on the authority of God's Word, often enduring persecution for their beliefs. Early Baptists taught that baptism should follow a personal profession of faith in Jesus Christ and therefore rejected the practice of infant baptism. This commitment to believers' baptism, along with other foundational biblical convictions, continues to shape our doctrine, ministry, and identity today. (Acts 2:41; Acts 8:36–38).

Biblical Authority
We believe that the Bible is the inspired and authoritative Word of God and the sole foundation for our faith and practice. Because Scripture is God's revelation to mankind, it provides everything we need for understanding truth, guiding our beliefs, and directing our lives. Therefore, we reject any authority placed above or alongside God's Word, including human traditions and church councils. (2 Timothy 3:16–17; 2 Peter 1:20–21).

Autonomy of the Local Church
We believe that each local church is accountable directly to Christ and is free from outside denominational control. As an autonomous church, Open Door Baptist Church is self-governing, self-supporting, and self-propagating, with responsibility for its leadership, doctrine, finances, ministry, and membership. This independence allows us to faithfully follow God's Word as we carry out the mission He has given us. (Acts 6:1–5; Acts 13; Acts 15; Matthew 18:15–17; 1 Corinthians 16).

Priesthood of Believers
We believe that every believer has direct access to God through Jesus Christ, our great High Priest and the only Mediator between God and man. Because of Christ's finished work, we can confidently approach God's throne in prayer without the need for any earthly mediator. We also believe that every believer has the privilege and responsibility of representing Christ to others and interceding in prayer on behalf of those around them. (Hebrews 4:16; 1 Timothy 2:5).

Two Ordinances
We believe that Christ gave the church two ordinances to observe: believers' baptism by immersion and the Lord's Supper. Baptism is a public declaration of a person's faith in Jesus Christ and identification with His death, burial, and resurrection. The Lord's Supper serves as a remembrance of Christ's sacrifice on our behalf and a celebration of the salvation He has provided. (Matthew 28:19–20; Acts 2:41; Acts 8:36–38; 1 Corinthians 11:23–26).

Individual Soul Liberty
We believe that every believer is personally accountable to God and will one day give an account of their life and service to Christ. Because each believer stands before God individually, we also believe that every Christian has the responsibility and privilege of studying Scripture for themselves and living according to their convictions under the guidance of God's Word and the Holy Spirit. (2 Corinthians 5:10).

Salvation Based Membership
We believe that church membership is reserved for those who have personally placed their faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Because the church is a body of believers united by the Gospel, every member should have a personal relationship with Christ and a testimony of salvation. Through membership, believers commit to worshiping, serving, growing, and fulfilling the mission of the local church together. (Romans 10:9–13).

Two Offices
We believe that God has established two offices within the local church: pastor and deacon. The terms pastor, elder, and bishop all refer to the same office, emphasizing the pastor's role as shepherd, spiritual leader, and overseer of the congregation. Deacons are spiritually qualified men who serve the church by meeting practical needs and supporting the ministry under the pastor's leadership. Both offices are essential to the health and ministry of the local church. (Acts 6:1–7; Acts 20:17, 28–30; Philippians 1:1; 1 Timothy 3:1–13; 1 Peter 5:1–4).

Separation of Church and State
We believe that God has established three institutions: the family, the church, and civil government. Each has a distinct role and responsibility under His authority. While the church is called to proclaim God's truth and promote righteousness, government is responsible for maintaining order and protecting the religious freedoms of its citizens. We therefore believe that church and state should remain separate, each fulfilling its God-given purpose. (Matthew 22:21).
